9:30-10:00  Rapid searches for radio transients(Ralph Wijers)
10:00-10:30  The progress of MeerKAT and MeerLICHT(Patrick Woudt)
10:30-11:00  The UK’s activities in high energy Astrophysics(MARTIN WARD)
11:00-11:30  The origin of the gamma-rays and other EM counterparts observed in association with GW170817(Tsvi Piran)

报告人简介:
Ralph Wijers: Ralph Wijers has been professor of high-energy astrophysics at the University of Amsterdam since 2002. He specialises in energetic explosions from extreme objects such as black holes and neutron stars and is PI of the AARTFAAC all-sky radio telescope. He got his MSc from Leiden Observatory and his PhD from the University of Amsterdam. He went on to Princeton on a NASA Compton Fellowship and Cambridge on a Royal Society Fellowship, after which he became assistant professor at Stonybrook University. He is a VICI and ERC Advanced Investigator laureate and winner of the 2002 EU Descartes Prize for his discoveries in gamma-ray bursts, with an international team. He teaches enthusiastically from the broad undergraduate level to highly specialised graduate courses, and is actively involved in outreach. He is a member of several national and international scientific governing and advisory councils. Since 2011, he is director of the Anton Pannekoek Institute for Astronomy.

Patrick Woudt: Prof Patrick Woudt is the head of the Astronomy Department at the University of Cape Town, and President of the South African Institute of Physics. He completed his PhD in 1998 at the University of Cape Town. Prof Woudt leads the large survey project ThunderKAT (radio transients) on the SKA-precursor MeerKAT radio telescope, and the associated MeerLICHT project; these are large international research consortia focused on the study of radio transients in the era of the Square Kilometre Array precursors. ThunderKAT and MeerLICHT use a novel coordinated radio-optical approach to study the physics of accretion-induced energetic outflow from compact binaries.

Martin Ward: Martin Ward is currently the Temple Chevallier Chair of Astronomy. He has previously held positions at Cambridge, Oxford and Leicester, before coming to Durham in 2004. He is an observational astrophysicist whose research interests include black holes and quasars. He was a consultant for the European Space Agency and is involved in the next generation Hubble Telescope, project. He is interested in science public outreach, and has been a guest on Patrick Moore’s “The Sky at Night”, and Melvyn Bragg’s “In Our Time”.

Tsvi Piran: Tsvi Piran is the current Schwartzmann professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He is one of the world leaders in the field of relativistic astrophysics. His research spans a very wide range of topics, from the early universe and inflation to the inner structure of black holes. He is best known for his work on Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) and for the prediction from the late 80ies that binary neutron star mergers are sources of GRBs.  The recent observations of the LIGO-Virgo detectors and the Fermi satellite dramatically verified this prediction last summer with the simultaneous detection of a gravitational wave signal and a short GRB.

Chryssa Kouveliotou: CHRYSSA KOUVELIOTOU (NAS) is a professor in Astrophysics in the Department of Physics at The George Washington University (GWU) and Director of the APSIS Institute. Her research interests include high-energy astrophysical transients, in particular gamma ray bursts (GRBs) and magnetars, which she discovered in 1998. She has over 450-refereed publications, including a book on GRBs. She has received multiple awards, including the Descartes Prize, the Rossi and Heineman Prize; she has been decorated by the Greek Government as a Commander of the Order of the Honor, for excellence in science. She has a Ph.D. from the Technical University of Munich, and two honorary degrees. She is a member of the US National Academy and of the US Academy of Arts and Sciences and a foreign /corresponding member of the Dutch Royal Academy and the Greek National Academy.
