报告内容简介
One of the major trends in distributed computing in the last decade, alongside grids and clouds, has been volunteer computing. Over 1 million people around the globe, including many in China, have contributed to more than 100 online science projects via the Internet. In the process, these volunteers have produced petaflops of free computing power for scientists – much more, in fact, than any grid or cloud computing resource. As well as providing computing power, such projects help stimulate public interest and support for science, especially amongst the younger generation. But so far, the scientists who have benefitted are based almost uniquely in North America and Europe. In this talk, I will outline how Chinese scientists could benefit from volunteer computing, too. I will discuss a number of important issues for the success of such distributed computing in China, including what type of science projects are best adapted to this computing model, and how security, reliability, and volunteer interest can be maintained. I will also discuss a new trend, volunteer thinking, which is potentially of even greater relevance to Chinese science.
